Discussion on the 7 Churches

This blog entry is intended to be a discussion for my Wednesday night Revelation class. However, anyone is welcome to join in.

The following are possible questions for discussion about the section on the Seven Churches of Asia:

1. What church(es) in Revelation do you personally most identify with?

2. As far as the church in America as a whole – which features in the 7 churches are struggles we face today? And why?

1.) I've never really thought about this -- I probably should have -- but I guess Smyrna? He encourages them not to wallow in their self-pity & to face what God has planned for them with a resolute spirit.

2.) I think for the context we work in -- the Churches of Christ in America today -- the words to the church at Ephesus holds a lot of relevance for us today. When you track that church from Acts, to the pastoral epistles, to the letter to the Ephesians, and finally to this passage, you see that they were a church that, in John 1:14 terms, was high on truth & likely low on grace. There are some grace churches among us that really don't need that message, but for a great majority of our COC's, they need to heed that message.

Thanks Phillip for your input. I think Ephesus is a good choice, though for slightly different reasons. It seems to me that their main problem was not necessarily grace, but passion. They had forgotten their first love. They are good with doctrine and dealing with falsehoods, but have just lost their heart for Jesus.
It seems like many churches today have lost their passion for sharing the good news of Christ. It is a second-generation-Christian plague which Christ demands we get over.
Press on.
